In his novel Exit West, Mohsin Hamid captures the mindset of college students living in an unnamed city being torn about by Islamic radicals:

“It might seem odd that in cities teetering at the edge of the abyss young people still go to class—in this case an evening class on corporate identity and product branding—but that is the way of things, with cities as with life, for one moment we are pottering about our errands as usual and the next we are dying, and our eternally impending ending does not put a stop to our transient beginnings and middles until the instant when it does.”

Regarding climate change, our world is gradually “teetering on the edge of abyss”–and yet, human beings generally shake off nihilistic tendencies and do what they can each day to foster an abundant life. One such task involves what’s called “climate intelligence.”

Climate intelligence refers to the knowledge and insights derived from analyzing climate data and trends to make informed decisions that minimize risks and capitalize on opportunities related to climate change. It involves understanding how climate factors affect specific sectors, regions, and operations and using this information to adapt business strategies, enhance resilience, and drive innovation in response to environmental changes. This form of intelligence supports organizations in planning, risk management, and identifying sustainable practices that align with global climate goals.

Different sectors can approach this challenge by integrating sustainable practices and promoting climate literacy. Here’s an overview involving areas where I tend to focus most of my efforts as an executive coach and facilitator.

Talent Development Teams
